The show

A Broadway show pairing the greatest comedians of our time with the band Lawrence — performer tracking for the explosive musical sets that turned a theatre into a concert.

The brief

All Out ran for several months on Broadway — two shows in one: the funniest people alive performing original stories about ambition written by Simon Rich, interlaced with mind-melting live music from Lawrence. The comedians were lit conventionally — they didn't need tracking because they weren't going anywhere. Lawrence was a different story. Gracie and Clyde move across the full stage, the rest of the band plays like they're headlining a festival, not standing in a Broadway house. The lighting needed to follow all of it in real time.

The challenge

Concert energy in a theatre space. Lawrence's stage presence is kinetic — they cover ground, they interact with the crowd, they shift the focal point of the performance constantly. Traditional followspots couldn't keep up with the pace, and pre-programmed positions would've looked stiff against the spontaneity of the performance. Zactrack's UWB tracking gave us real-time position data fast enough to ride the energy of the music.

The programming had to feel like the lights were part of the band — reacting, not chasing.

What we did

We designed and programmed the Zactrack system around Lawrence's performance style — feeding real-time position data into pan and tilt so the fixtures followed the performers wherever they went on stage. When Gracie crossed downstage, the light was already there. When Clyde stepped away from the keys, the system found him instantly.

Zactrack did the heavy lifting, taking data in from the console and trackers, combining it and then outputting it back out onto the lighting network. We tuned the tracking so it felt immediate and natural — not robotic, not laggy, just there.

The result

A show that felt like two completely different experiences held together by one seamless production. The tracking disappeared into Lawrence's sets — the audience saw a band lit like the room was alive, not a technology demo. Which is exactly what you want when the music is that good.
